Enterprise Control System Installation Example: Single Room

Generally speaking, controlling an A/V enabled room requires:

• A control interface (UI)
• A brain to instruct devices what to do (Controller)
• Inputs and outputs to connect devices (IO)
• And, of course, devices to control

Perhaps the most unique thing about Pacific Interactive’s EC Series is how the components are distributed. Most control systems combine the controller and the I/O in one box, requiring devices be installed close to the controller. It also means a controller is often required for each room. EC Series architecture doesn’t suffer these limitations, as any component can reside anywhere there’s a network connection.

Another important difference is that EC Series installations do not depend on proprietary hardware (but can easily incorporate it as necessary). EC Series is a standards-based system. To make life simple, we offer a full complement of products to fit customer needs, but you are also free to spec the I/O, computer and display that best suits the installation’s requirements without the worry of compatibility issues. PI products even integrate well with our competitors' offerings.

In a single room installation, three components are key: The EC Controller, a choice of UI and, as necessary, an Edge converter to handle IR, contact closure, sensors, relays and serial protocols.

  • Installation Description
  • In a single room configuration, EC Controller stores room configuration data, runs agents responsible for controlling devices and provides communication services for user interfaces and tools.

An Edge converter provides Ethernet-to-Serial and Ethernet-to-Infrared conversion and is managed by an EC Controller. There are also Edge converters that handle contact closures and sensor inputs.

The Tablet PC acts as a control interface and could be replaced by a wired computer and monitor or touchscreen. In a slightly modified version of this room, all controls could be handled by a wall mount touchscreen or handheld controls.  Of course, the whole thing could be run from a web browser, too.
